WEEKLY BULLETIN

23 February 2024

Welcome from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope this message finds you well. As we navigate through the recent weeks, our school community continues to process the tragic events that have deeply affected us all. In remembrance and solidarity, our students will be visiting the memorial site of the recent incident to lay flowers. Additionally, they have generously made a donation in the name of the Sea Mills children to a charity that supports children who are victims of domestic violence, Next Link Bristol

We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents to remain vigilant around social media activities. In collaboration with the Police and Bristol City Council, we are actively addressing safety concerns to ensure the well-being of our students.

On a brighter note, Wednesday 21 February marked UN International Mother Languages Day, providing us with a reason to bring joy to Montpelier High School. Special thanks to Ms Katy Isaac for organising such a stellar event. We were honoured to have Muktomoncho Bristol in attendance, enriching our understanding of the origins of this day and sharing traditional songs from Bangladesh, as well as students from The Dolphin School, Fairlawn Primary, Barton Hill Primary, and Bannerman Road Primary.

Alongside MHS students, our visitors showcased dance, sign language, singing, and poetry to celebrate their mother languages. The event, expertly compered by Mr Trystan Williams, was a wonderful display of cultural diversity and unity.

As we come together to support one another during challenging times and celebrate the richness of our diverse community, let us continue fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all.

HEAD STUDENT TEAM

The Sixth Form Team would like to introduce our new Head Student Team. Our New Head Student, Chloe McGregor, comments:

'I am so excited and grateful to be a part of the Head Student Team 2024-2025. We were invited to apply by preparing a personal statement on why we wanted to be part of the Head Student Team and were then asked to interview for the specific position we wanted. This involved preparing and presenting a speech in two hours to deliver to our panel and peers, followed by a one-to-one interview with the Heads of Year and last year’s Head Student. I am so lucky to be surrounded by a fantastic team this year, and we are really looking forward to all that lies ahead.’

Miss Blything (Head of Year 13) would like to congratulate the new team on their roles. They will now be attending all the year group assemblies over the next few weeks to let the main school students know how they can support and inspire them to excel at Montpelier High School.

POST 18 CAREERS INFORMATION EVENING

We are hosting a careers information evening for students in Years 11, 12 and 13 from 6.30 - 7.15 pm on Thursday 29 February in the MHS Theatre. There will be representatives from The University of Bristol and ASK Apprenticeships (Western Training Provider Network) as well as key labour market information both locally and nationally to help students make decisions about their future. Please complete this form if you will be attending the evening. Students are welcome to attend with their parents/guardians, entrance will be via the glass doors on Cheltenham Road.

COMMUNITY MOT EVENT

We are DET Community - an organisation putting on free health and well being events in different parts of Bristol. Our events promote mental and physical health and wellbeing services in the local area, and include organisations giving free blood pressure checks and liver scans.

We are also really lucky to be hosting Each One Teach One who offer therapeutic advice for young people who are at risk, which is especially relevant as knife crime continues to be a problematic issue in Bristol's community.
