WEEKLY BULLETIN

26 April 2024

Welcome from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Community

I am delighted to share some exciting updates and achievements in the latest edition of our Parent Bulletin.

Firstly, let’s celebrate the outstanding achievement of Altoma, our V6 Young City Poet, who recently participated in the prestigious Lyra Festival. Her exceptional talent and dedication to poetry are truly inspiring to us all.

A group of our Y10 students have won the Young Enterprise Innovation Award following a presentation of their business ideas to HSBC earlier in the year; an outstanding achievement and you can read more about this later in the bulletin.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to the students who warmly welcomed members of the Society of Merchant Venturers (SMV) to our school. The students did an excellent job discussing the various projects sponsored by SMV throughout the year, showcasing their engagement and enthusiasm.

I am equally thrilled to announce that MHS has been recognised as a School of Sanctuary. This is a testament to the relentless efforts of our students and staff, led by Mrs. White, in fostering an inclusive and welcoming community. This quality mark celebrates our commitment to being a safe and supportive environment for all.

Looking ahead, we are excited about the upcoming Culture & Identity Day. This event promises to be a wonderful opportunity to further cement our ethos of belonging and celebrate the diverse backgrounds that enrich our school community. A menu change for Friday to celebrate this event is announced later in the bulletin.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement.

Yours sincerely

Vanetta Spence

Y11 OFFERS FOR A PLACE AT V6 SIXTH FORM

All offer letters have now been sent out to parents/carers confirming their child's offers for a place at V6 Sixth Form (conditional on obtaining our entry requirements).

We have received a large number of applications this year and therefore it is very important that applicants return the attached acceptance form sent with the offer letter via email or post by Friday 12 May. If at any point you decide that we will not be your first choice, please let us know by contacting us so we may allocate your place to somebody on the waiting list.

Age Appropriate Reading, Booktok & Student Safeguarding

We are thrilled by the active engagement of many of our students with our culture that promotes reading for pleasure and a delight to see them enjoy a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts. We appreciate the support from parents who help nurture their children's reading habits by purchasing books for them. This complements the opportunity for students to borrow books from our well-equipped school library during their free time throughout the school week.

You might observe your child reading books or requesting books recommended on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok using the hashtag #Booktok. Whilst it is wonderful to see any trend that fosters reading and a passion for literature, we must ensure that the content they are accessing is age-appropriate for the children and young people under our care.

Used by influencers and publishers to promote books, #Booktok is predominantly targeted at the young adult book market (around 13-18 years old). However, these recommendations have unexpectedly gained popularity among MHS students. While many #Booktok books may be suitable for your child's age group, some are intended for an adult audience, featuring themes and situations unsuitable for children.

If, as a parent or guardian, you have allowed your child to read a book not intended for children, we kindly ask that they avoid bringing it to school as their reading material. Our dedicated Librarian, Form Tutors and English teaching teams are available to guide your child in selecting an alternative, age-appropriate book for school reading. Some books in the school library are labelled with age restrictions to aid their selection, ensuring children are not exposed to situations they may not be ready for.

We encourage parents to continue discussing reading habits with their children, take an interest in the content and address any concerns or confusion. If you need advice or information on book themes or content, please refer to the Common Sense Media website.

Some examples of the books to which we refer can be found here.
