WEEKLY BULLETIN

26 January 2024

Welcome from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Thank you to everyone in our school community who has been involved in another busy week at MHS.

Today we welcomed Liz Johnson, paralympic medallist, to work with groups of Year 9 children on improving confidence and self-esteem, building resilience and helping them to discover what motivates them. Ms Johnson brought in her gold, silver and bronze medals and did some energising and lively team building exercises. Today was the first of 8 sessions and we look forward to seeing the benefits it brings to our students.

On Wednesday, we welcomed Joanna Mallinson from The BE Project to talk to parents about drugs and alcohol awareness. Joanna has been working with young people since 2002 and has been involved with the Bristol Drugs Project for the last seven years. Joanna also discussed the dangers of vaping in teenagers which is an increasing problem in our society and we highly recommend this Panorama documentary on the topic.

Our PSHE Drop Down day on Thursday was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn outside the curriculum, covering an array of different PSHE topics. We are so grateful to all those outside agencies who contributed to the day (please see 12 January bulletin for further information on subjects covered and organisations involved). Our students were complimented on their engagement and good behaviour by our external speakers. We have one further Drop Down day to look forward to before the end of the school year.

Thank you to all those Y9 parents and guardians who attended our Options Evening last night. The event was very well attended and it was encouraging to see so much enthusiasm from our Y9 students regarding their future choices and GCSE planning. We look forward to welcoming the Y9 parent/guardian cohort again next week on 1 February for Parent's Evening. Please follow the link you've been sent to book your appointments. If you are not able book appointments with all the subject teachers you would like to see, please contact them direct via email to arrange a catch up.

Have a great weekend,

Vanetta Spence

WORLD HIJAB DAY – 1 FEBRUARY 2024 (Repeat Notice)

Join us in celebrating World Hijab Day on Thursday 1 February, a significant event organised by the student-led Diversity, Equality & Inclusion group, All Equal, All Different. Our group hopes that this event will support in shaping our school understanding of freedom, diversity and respect for different religious beliefs.

World Hijab Day, supported by the World Hijab Day Organization, emphasizes the importance of promoting and safeguarding the rights of all individuals, including the freedom of thought, conscience, and religion or belief. This annual event goes beyond just raising awareness about the hijab; it is a platform to break down stereotypes associated with Muslim women who choose to wear it.

By participating in World Hijab Day, we can learn about personal freedom of religious expression, fostering understanding and promoting diversity. All Equal, All Different, the student-led initiative behind this event, strives to encourage dialogue among students of various faiths and backgrounds.

As parents, your support is invaluable in nurturing an environment where your teenagers can engage in meaningful conversations about diversity, inclusion, and the importance of respecting different religious choices. We invite you to join us on 1 February and be a part of this inspiring initiative that contributes to creating a more inclusive and understanding community within our school. We are looking for donations of Hijabs for our event and Guest Speakers. Please contact us via MHS-Info@montpschool.org if you can help us.
