Enrichment & Extra Curricular
School Set Design Enrichment by Smaranda, Misha and Lorna (Y8)
We interviewed the School Set Design Enrichment students where they create the amazing sets for our upcoming school play (High School Musical). We were excited to see what the group was up to and how they were getting along. When we arrived, the students were working on making some East High signs, which is the name of the school, and they were also working on some lockers. Miss Denyer mentioned they are trying to create a school setting to make them feel they are a part of East High (the secondary school and the main set).
Miss Denyer mentioned that her favourite part of the design process was the collaborative process and team effort, which links on to her favourite part of leading this enrichment, which was seeing all the different year groups working together to make something and making new friends!
Two students in Y8 said that they are making some lockers and the East High sign right now and Miss Denyer announced that in the future, they will be designing some backdrops for the play. They really enjoy the design process because it is less stressful, and their favorite part of the enrichment is making the set because it is more fun to take part in and more relaxing. One of the students we asked wants to take part in interior design when they are older, and this enrichment helps a lot with that. We really enjoyed interviewing this enrichment, and we recommend it to anyone who loves to be crafty!
Arabic Enrichment by Leila, Tehillah, Renad and Loujain (Y9)
We went to visit the Arabic enrichment where students learn the Arabic language and culture. This enrichment is open to all year groups 7-11. We spoke to multiple students about their enrichment and asked a variety of questions. When we arrived, the student were sat down watching a video on Arabic culture and food.
When we asked why they chose this enrichment they said because they want to learn a new language and culture because they think its important to be educated on multiple cultures. We asked what things they do and had a few answers to this one. Aneesha said that they learn how to write they’re names in Arabic and other basics such as hello and how are you?
Many students said that Arabic gives them a chance to reconnect with their culture and heritage. This also gives students a chance to share their voices, opinions and things in common, with those of the same culture. On the other hand, others said that it helps boost their speaking skills. One member said, “People are nothing without their language”.
When we saw the enrichment, we thought it looked quite peaceful and relaxing. There was an exciting movie playing in the background and it looked quite interesting and creative.
Women in Stem Enrichment by Iris and Amal (Y9)
We decided to visit the Women in Stem enrichment, run by Miss Adams-Foot, intrigued by its title and its relevance in the modern-day world, as AI and technology is front and center in our lives today. We interviewed a group of anonymous Year 9 students, and they told us; “I think that this is a great enrichment for empowering women because it shows us how women contribute to our world today.”
The students we interviewed were enthusiastic but respectful of the club’s peaceful atmosphere. It was a calm and relaxing place to be, and I think that was one of the main attractions of the enrichment, as well as whole friendship groups choosing it. We had gained invaluable information from the enrichment’s participants and from Miss Adams-Foot herself, who was very welcoming and excited to see us, and obviously passionate about the subject. We saw a calm, tranquil environment that was focused on both the future and the past, and how we and countless others before have shaped it.
They also stated that it’s good enrichment for friends as you can collaborate and discuss about heroes in STEM, both historical and present, such as Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina woman in space, and Florence Nightingale, a doctor in the Crimean war. They made PowerPoint presentations and conducted lengthy research on their chosen Woman in Stem and reported that they will ‘present it at the end of the term’, after working exceptionally hard on their PowerPoint presentations.
V6 News
Christina is University of Cambridge Competition Finalist
We would like to send our congratulations to Christina in Y13 at V6 for becoming a finalist in The University of Cambridge's HE+ essay competition.
Christina comments “Over the course of the past year, The University of Cambridge has offered a wide range of opportunities to inform students like myself about higher education in a program called 'HE+', including a competition where participants can write and submit a project around a certain theme - this year, 'uncertainty'. As a result of the encouragement of staff (including Ms Croom, our head of Oxbridge support) I had the privilege of coming in the top 25 nationally in this competition, and will be presenting my project on "Can we know how automatic the future of cars will be?" in November at The University of Cambridge at an Academic conference - an event I am excitedly awaiting. As an aspiring Cambridge applicant, this news was incredible and I look forwards to doing our school proud.”
Miss Blything, Head of Year 13 said “This is a fantastic achievement; we are incredibly proud of Christina for going beyond the curriculum and taking the opportunities that we promote at V6. Christina is an active member of Year 13 as she is on the Head Student Team and leads on the Student Parliament in main school. She is applying to read Computer Science at the University so this will demonstrate her abilities.”
We are excited to hear all about her experience at the University of Cambridge, and hope it inspires our Year 12s and future V6 students to aim high.
Aleena represents Great Britain in Powerlifiting
“Hi, I’m Aleena and I represent GBR for powerlifting. I'm in Year 13 at V6, and applying to study Dentistry next year. My lifting story began with the inspiration from my mum, a powerlifter herself. This sport has helped me understand myself more as I continually grow and make progress. As a Pakistani female I believe it’s important to break down barriers and give it your all. In September I proudly represented Great Britain at the European Women's Juniors and Sub-Juniors Classic Championships in Hungary.”
Miss Blything, Head of year 13 said “We are all so proud of Aleena. She has kept up strong grades, been an active member of the Head Student Team and supported our EAL students by volunteering with Jacari last year. We wish her the best of luck in her future powerlifting competitions!”
Head Student Team Represent V6 Sixth Form at SMV Dinner
The Head Student Team at V6 were proud to represent the school at a dinner hosted by The Society of Merchant Venturers, alongside members from Collegiate and Merchant's Academy.
Deputy Head Student, Christina said “Throughout the evening, we were able to network with the Merchant Venturers and gain access to incredible opportunities such as work experience through them - making the evening a wonderful chance to meet those who sponsor us and learn more about them. Another enjoyable aspect was talking to other schools, as we were able to gain insight into how other prefect teams function as well as make new friends within our partner schools. Overall, the evening was lovely and an all-round success.”
Head of Year 13, Miss Blything, comments “This was a fantastic celebratory evening for our hard working Head Student Team. They have worked tirelessly in main school to support with mentoring, student parliament and raising money for charity. This is a night we look forward to every year.”
Year 12 Ben Applies for Children’s Commisioner
Ben Barber from Y12 has applied for The Children's Commissioner and has been invited to be one of Dame Rachel De Souza's Children's Commissioners' Ambassadors.
In June, Ben applied for "The Big Ambition Survey," which aims to understand what children want before the next General Election. Although he was not selected initially, he received an email in November stating that a place had become available on the Ambassadors Programme, and he was the first person they thought of.
Ben's application stood out due to his passion for creating change and advocating for better lives for children and young people. His enthusiasm and commitment were evident, which impressed the selectors.
Ben is set to travel to London in December to attend an introduction session for all Ambassadors. We are all incredibly proud of him and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Prom Fundraiser Bake Sale
Well done to these our fantastic sixth formers who held a bake sale to raise funds for the sixth form prom.
Christmas Tree Donation from Beverley Douglas
Thank you to community elder and author Beverley Douglas for their kind donation of a tree that has brought some festive cheer to our reception area.
Beverley has donated trees to several schools in East Central Bristol - we are very grateful. We really appreciated the time given by sixth formers to make the tree look beautiful - thanks so much!

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
We know how beneficial the DofE scheme is to our students and communities- it is recognised by employers, universities and colleges as a mark of achievement and personal development. It is also a lot of fun, as participants can choose activities that suit their interests and passions, make new friends, have fun and build confidence.
Following their excellent performance during the practice expedition earlier this term, a huge well done to our Year 11s for completing Duke of Edinburgh Silver in continual rain showers and staying positive throughout! They all passed their expedition. Well done!
Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze students should have received their login and they will start learning about successfully completing the expedition during Enrichment from January until April.
Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh Silver need to ensure that they have completed all of their Bronze Award and start logging their skills for Silver.
Year 12 Duke of Edinburgh Gold should be logging their activities and thinking about their plans for a residential.
If you have any questions about the DofE scheme at our school, please contact Mrs Donovan, our DofE Coordinator (ceri.donovan@montpschool.org)
Sports News
This term has been a really successful netball term as all year groups have competed in the Bristol League. We have had some excellent wins against our local rivals and all players have shown respect when representing the school. A big shout out to the Year 8 Netball team who was the most successful team for MHS. The Year 7 team have shown resilience when competing in their first secondary school netball league.
Students have shown commitment and dedication when attending extra-curricular clubs every week. Next term, we will be starting extra-curricular football and hockey clubs. Fixtures to commence shortly when we return in January.
Attendance
We encourage all students to make the effort to attend school every day. Our goal is to foster an environment where every student strives to maintain an attendance rate of at least 96%, celebrating their commitment to learning. Please note, in line with our Attendance Policy we are not able to authorise absence for family holidays during term time. We have an extended winter break from 13 December until 3 January and will not be able to authorise extended absences beyond that date.
Our attendance strategy is designed to:
Attendance over one academic year, if a student had:
98% attendance = fewer than 4 days absent from school
90% attendance = 4 weeks absent from school
80% attendance = 7½ weeks absent from school
(This is equivalent to missing a day’s learning each week of the whole school year).
Consistent school attendance has a positive impact on motivation and achievement. Thank you for your continued support and communication with your child's attendance. You will receive an attendance letter during the first week of Term 3 in January which will inform you of your child's attendance since September.
Careers News
We firmly believe that high-quality careers education and guidance is crucial to young people's futures, and this is a priority at MHS & V6 Sixth Form. Our goal is to help our learners prepare for the workplace by providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the professional world, including the various paths to jobs and careers that they may find both fulfilling and rewarding.
Careers Fair
Our recent careers fair was a massive hit, with hundreds of students from Year 7 to 13 in attendance. The event featured an array of employers, all of which provided invaluable insights into future career paths. We would like to extend a massive thank you to our partners, including Circomedia, City of Bristol, Bristol School of Acting, SGS, NHS, Rolls Royce, Atkins Realis, Renishaw, Wessex Water, Burges Salmon, Hayes Parsons, University of Bath, UWE and Duke of Edinburgh. We look forward to hosting you again at our next careers event.
Year 7 Tenner Challenge

Year 7 have successfully completed the Tenner Challenge and raised money for charity whilst doing this. The atmosphere was buzzing in the hall during the sales. Well done Year 7!
Year 9 Careers
Many thanks to Jake from The University of Bath for talking to Year 9 students about life at university and to the Gritty Talent team for providing an interesting insight into creative careers.
Year 10 & Year 12 Work Experience
Students in Year 10 & Year 12 will need to find a work experience placement for the week prior to activities week, Monday 1 - Friday 5 July 2024.
Placements that are made available to us at school will be emailed out to students and also added to the Careers Padlet. This is linked to the school website under the section on Careers.
Royal Navy visit Year 10 Food & Nutrition
We recently had the pleasure of hosting the Royal Navy to speak to our year 10 students about naval careers. The students were attentive and well-behaved, and the navy's presentation on career opportunities was both informative and polished.
The troops were impressed with the students' culinary skills, particularly their sticky toffee pudding, which they proclaimed to be the best they've had from any school in the country. They also noted that our students were the only ones who managed to complete the two dishes and clean up with time to spare. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with the navy representatives expressing their desire to return next year.
Overall, it was a fantastic event, and our students truly enjoyed the experience.
Parents & Carers – Apprenticeship Information evenings (Feb 2024)
After the success of last years Parent & Carer roadshows, WTPN will be rerunning similar events in February, this time working in collaboration with the Institute of Technology.
The WTPN Parent & Carer Apprenticeship Information Evenings will be hosted 1 in each county and open to all, with a panel of employers, apprentices and training provider all on hand to answer questions and share their experiences. All run at various dates during Feb 2024, 17:30 - 19:00.
Year 9 & 10 Routes into STEM Course
Etrust are now accepting applications for their Bristol Face to Face Routes into STEM course experience that will take place over the February half term – 13th – 15th February 2024.
There are 30 places available, and they expect a lot of applications so would encourage any interested students to apply as soon as possible.
If the cost is a barrier for any students, they ask that you indicate this on the application form as they do have some fully funded places available. Click here for more information.
Student Parliament
Student Parliamentarians are the voice of our students.
They are democratically elected each school year by their peers. Every student in the school has the opportunity to be elected to the Parliament. It is an entirely inclusive and transparent process. These student leadership opportunities allow our students to experience the responsibilities of global citizenship and demonstrate how they can create meaningful change in their own community. The Student Parliament works closely with various staff members across the school and to provide regular feedback to our leadership team.
Thank you to our student Parliament team this term who have been active in raising pupil voice from across the year groups. They have attended cross Trust Parliament groups at Merchants Academy School and Bannerman Road Primary school, speaking to the new Trust CEO and giving ideas of how these sessions should run in the future. Parliament have also begun work with the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion group to begin working towards an anti-racism award for the school.
A massive thank you to Christina Harley in year 13 who has been chairing the meeting for the last year alongside Mrs Young. She is now passing the chair onto Ben Barker in Year 12 to focus on her upcoming examinations. Different prefects from each year will join the Parliament for January.
Trips and Visits
Integrate UK - Project Fearless
Integrate UK kindly invited 30 of our students to attend their conference at Bristol Aquarium. The students were mesmerised with all the work that Integrate UK do to promote positive activism.
We watched many performances and were inspired by their work. The students cannot wait to join Integrate UK's Project Fearless, which empowers young people to participate equally in an integrated, cohesive & representative society, helping this generation become young activists for change.
Tackling Diversity in Teaching
The biggest congratulations to Sasha, Ayesha, Danitor, Adama and Cymora for their presentation at University of Bristol.
TDT were invited back to University of Bristol to deliver a presentation to the PGCE student teachers. They stood up in front of an enormous room of 120 people delivering their message on diversity in curriculums.
They have been invited back again next year and have a guaranteed offer of a place on UoB's teaching course – if they want to go into the profession. We were SO proud of them.
Applications are open to students in year 9 and 10 if they would like to be involved next year!
Miss Bray + Miss Mayne
All Gods Children at Bristol Cathedral
Last term, Year 7 students visited the All God’s Children exhibition at Bristol Cathedral, which explores the impact of the slave economy on Cathedral life, past and present. The exhibition is part of the Cathedral’s work to understand its links with the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. The students learned about the history and legacy of slavery through the memorials and grave markers inside the Cathedral, and the portraits and comments from Christians in Bristol on College Green. They also had the opportunity to share their thoughts and feedback on what the Cathedral should do next to address its role in slavery and racism.
The students found the exhibition very informative and thought-provoking. They gained a better understanding of the history of slavery, and how it still affects people today. They were also able to appreciate the diversity and perspectives of the people featured in the exhibition, and how they expressed their faith and identity. Thank you to the Cathedral staff and volunteers for their warm welcome and guidance.
Year 9 Trip to Bristol Hippodrome
Mrs Rowe and the English team recently took Year 9 students to the Bristol Hippodrome to see the BLOC musical adaptation of Dickens' classic novel, "A Christmas Carol". in addition, the students thoroughly enjoyed the performance, it also serves as a crucial component of their upcoming GCSE course. This opportunity allows for a deeper comprehension of the book's characters and settings.
According to Mrs. Rowe, the production was a huge success and the students were thrilled to see the characters come to life on stage. The show presented a fresh, lively, and visually stunning take on the traditional Christmas tale.
Events
Black History Month - October ‘23
Black History Month is a time to celebrate and learn about the achievements and contributions of people of African descent throughout history. It is also a time to reflect on the struggles and challenges that they faced and continue to face in the fight for equality and justice.
Black History Month gives our students an opportunity to learn about the rich and diverse history of black people around the world. It can help students develop a better understanding of different cultures, perspectives and experiences. It can also inspire students to appreciate the achievements of black people in various fields such as science, art, literature, sports and politics. By learning about black history, students can also learn about the values of courage, resilience, perseverance and creativity that black people demonstrated throughout history. Black History Month is not only for black students, but for all students who want to learn more about the world and themselves.
In 2023, the theme for BHM is ‘saluting our sisters’. In lessons and through the tutor programme students have been learning about black women and their contributions throughout history. As well as important black women who shaped history hundreds of years ago, we have been finding out about local women who have made an enormous difference within their communities in Bristol in more recent years. It has been a delight to also see that our tutor time reading has been focussed on books both written by black female authors or about black female protagonists.
Halloween Dress-Up Fundraiser for Prom
Something very spooky was happening on 31st October....the fantastic Halloween dress-up (and non uniform day) was a fun-filled event that brought plenty of joy, laughter and scares!
This event raised over £600 to support students to attend the Year 13 and Year 11 proms, ensuring that as many students as possible can attend.
A Reunion to Remember: Visit from CGS ‘Old Girls’
Earlier this term, a group of former students from Colston's Girls' School were welcomed back for a trip down memory lane, and we couldn't have been happier to host them. Olivia, a former Head Girl, along with Sarah, Jane (who currently works with us as an administrator), and other pupils from the 1980s were eager to revisit their old stomping grounds. One member of the group, Jenny, had even attended the school back in 1956!
While much has changed over the decades, the trip was still a delightful experience that brought back fond memories.
Olivia expressed her gratitude, saying "Thank you for making us so welcome as we visited the school after all those years. Hard to believe where 40 years have gone! It was fabulous to see the school and see how much of the old building still remains but all the progress and new buildings including the 6th form block. As Sarah said it was a fascinating trip back in time and we all felt so excited to be served tea in the Headteacher’s study! It clearly still has powerful memories for us all! It was so kind of you to give up all that time and a joy to meet Vanetta. I am thrilled to see the school in this new era and with such a great Headteacher. Many thanks again for making this special visit possible. It was a wonderful day coming back to Bristol and meeting up with old school friends too.”
It was thrilling for them to see how the school has evolved over the years, including the new 6th form block and other progress, while still maintaining much of the original building. As Sarah put it, the trip was a fascinating journey back in time, and it was a special treat to be served tea in the Head teacher's study. Clearly, the school still holds a special place in their hearts.
We were so glad to have played a part in making this reunion possible and to have had the chance to introduce the group to our Head teacher, Vanetta. It was a joy to see them all reconnecting and reminiscing about their time at Colston's Girls' School. Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us, and we hope to welcome you back again soon!
Winter Concert
Traditionally, the end of the Winter term is a time for music, fun, and merriment. This year's Winter Concert was no exception, delivering a joyous evening filled with holiday cheer. Participants from Year 7 all the way through to sixth form took part in this event. Head of music, Miss Keen, expressed her delight in coordinating the evening, providing our students with opportunities to perform and explore their musical interests.
With over 150 people in attendance, the Winter Concert featured a variety of Christmas classics, including beautiful sounds from talented soloists and choral performances from our Harmonius Voices choir. We were also treated to fantastic instrumental performances from Big Noise inclusive orchestra. A big round of applause to our Year 7 choir for their outstanding performance. Overall, it was a wonderful, Christmassy evening enjoyed by all.
